THE RETURN

January 2, 2024 9:50 PM Holy Family Hospital Methuen Mass.

“Please help me.” Those were the only words I could utter to the doctor on my right as I lay in the emergency room.

“We are going to shock you.” He replied. There are no paddles like TV, but instead a sticker on your chest and one on your back. My heart was racing so fast that I could barely breathe. There was an audible ascending tone and a couple of seconds later I saw a bright flash of white light and someone yelled “clear.” It felt like being kicked in the chest by a mule. Then….everything went back to normal. That was the first round. I was shocked three more times in twenty minutes due to my heart rate going over two hundred beats per minute. Not good.

Following this, I was told that I would be getting on a Med Flight helicopter within ten to fifteen minutes. At that moment, I felt sheer terror. Helicopter. Holy shit. Besides Vanessa, there were several people in the room. Quickly, I was sedated and breathing tubes were inserted into my throat. I do not remember being moved, but I do remember feeling the helicopter take off, hearing the rotors and thinking……it’s for me. I’m in big trouble.

Ten minutes later, I was in an ICU in Boston, and I was unconscious, but stable. Little did I know what lay in store. As I type this, one month later, I am making solid progress at Spaulding Rehab Hospital in Boston and I am confident that I will make a full recovery.

Vanessa and I thank you all for the support. Everyone’s kindness has made a huge difference. More to come. I love you all
