BREATHE

A few years ago at a disability conference, I was telling the story of my journey and my takeaway message was (and is) that all humans are more the same than different. We all breathe the same air. We all drink the same water. We all strive for love, acceptance, respect, and a feeling of being needed on the Earth. In my classroom I have tried to instill the same message to thousands of adolescents. After my talk, a mom of a son with Duchenne told me that I reminded her to “breathe.” Always looking for insight, I asked her to “say more words about that.”…

Her response was something along the lines that we all move too fast from day to day and live in a world that runs on a treadmill at all times to the point that if any of us sit for an hour, we feel guilty that we are not getting “something done.” She told me that, through my eyes, knowing that my life may be cut short (um…that’s ALL of us), I had a unique perspective of balance between looking at what really matters (people, memories and experiences) and what really doesn’t (stuff, constant negativity, and ignorance). I’ve thought about her words from time to time and have tried to slow down, look around, and breathe in all the beauty that is around us.

Today I present to you the work of an outstanding amateur photographer, who also happens to be my sister, Dr. Sheila Moeschen. Her work has been noticed by many to stand out in the realm of the beauty of New England. So much so, that she has just inked a deal to publish some of her work in 2023.

To find more of her photography and writing, visit her Substack newsletter, Stay Curious:

You can also view more of her images on social media, Instagram: @wordnerdshe and on Facebook @SheilaMoeschen. She does calendars and other things as well. (Shameless plug). I am biased because she’s family…but actually not so much because her work is outstanding. She reminds us all to breathe. The message is universal. Enjoy the day and remember to take a look around.
