I have consumed 30 cheeseburgers this year but yesterday one of my old students met Mark Hamill who plays Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, and two days ago another old kid sent me a photo from Dodger Stadium where he attended game 4 of the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays which is pretty awesome.
My kids are some Roblox brain rot things for Halloween but I say they look like a mouse and a shark, and they asked me what happens if it rains on trick-or-treat and I told them that they get wet or bring an umbrella. They asked if I would drive them around if it is pouring like Hurricane Melissa and I said no because sorry kids that’s called youth and you can move fast and you need to learn that life is never what you want it to be like in your head all of the time which is fine because it is reality and you kids need to learn that so you don’t grow up and become people who can not handle adversity and just complain about things without offering solutions to better their said life situation in order to work well with others and compromise like all of our elected leaders will not do because none of them understand the reality of what it must be like to live from one paycheck to another while placing blame and guilt on everyone who is struggling that it must be their own fault. Things like that.
Other things that make me wonder what the hell we are doing include a recent meeting of grown ups that I attended that discussed what will happen if my little county in New Hampshire votes to house grown ups detained by ICE but these people would be from far away states and even though being “illegal” is actually a civil offense, some people think it’s a crime so the answer is have someone else pay for them to be flown across the country to sit in a jail in New Hampshire while others sort out why they “shouldn’t live here” even though they have committed no crime except existing which I’ve taught my kids isn’t really a crime unless you exist in a country that writes words that say it is so. To jail these people in New Hampshire will cost millions but that’s ok because the Congress which is currently shut down but its members are still getting paid told us that they will pay these millions but it might not be enough since these people who illegally exist need to eat and receive medical care according to people that write words that say this is so. If the millions doesn’t cover the heat, lights, salaries of the jail guards, paying to remove snow from the jail parking lot in the winter as well as medical care, bedding, food, water, toilet paper and lawyers so the illegal people who are only illegal because words on paper say they must live elsewhere….breathe….if the millions won’t cover it that’s ok because we have taxes to cover the rest. Taxes in New Hampshire are mostly collected by billing all of the residents twice a year for any property and shelter that they own. Basically, this is a fee for existing but because we require land and shelter to exist, we must pay for that. We must pay that money so we can have school and firemen and policemen who can spot others who can exist, but they need to exist somewhere else rather than here. They should exist where they were first born because even though you can grow up to be a grown up, you can move to live wherever you want but you actually can’t because people that write words on paper called laws have said that some people can only exist in other places and not here, wherever “here” is. Your crime if we can use that word is that you exist currently in a place where you are not supposed to, so you might be getting things that you are not supposed to get like food and medicine and stuff in the sandbox that doesn’t belong to you. Kids you should share and be nice to everyone and help others until you become an adult and you can explain and show others that you can be an illegal human being and not exist here, wherever here is. Somewhere else you can exist, but “here” we might put you in jail for a bit so you can think about how bad it is to exist at the cost of other people who exist but exist in the correct way.
While I am on the subject of long run on sentences, like a jail sentence, I should add that I know plenty of people who exist and work 2 or 3 jobs. They exist well but the jobs don’t give out too much green paper with dead leaders on the front, so these people need help from others. Some of them have expensive medical conditions, which are not their fault although others talk about people simply being too expensive to exist but if you legally exist you need help to pay your medical bills, get medicine, food, shelter and clothing so that you can be what people who write words on paper call “A PRODUCTIVE MEMBER OF SOCIETY!” Getting this help requires a lot of yelling, networking, time, energy and patience. As long as you exist legally, sometimes you can get the help you need, but others call that a “hand out” and lecture that our vast and wealthy place that we call a country should not be giving out free things because many people cheat and don’t need free things but try to get them anyway. It’s like cheating in school, which everyone did, but now that we are adults, cheating is bad and no one should be getting a meal unless they earn it by legally existing in a place where people who write words on paper tell us that they can be. These people pay the taxes, work hard, and exist so that they can have extra to fund the jail bills of the people being held there that have not been charged with any crime except for existing in the wrong place.
Try explaining this to the kids. See what happens.
What. Are. We. Doing? Have we all lost our minds?
Stay safe, stay aware, and for the love of God, please stop yelling. I’m not a fan of the yelling. In a few short years, we will all be dead. This is the landscape that we are going to leave for the kids?
