INDEPENDENCE AND DISTANCE

I love my country, but I strongly disagree with the people that we have elected to high office at this time. We must shine light on history and not forget that the majority of it was created by normal everyday human beings like us.

We live in a place where we can travel to the moon, but can’t decide on how to vanquish hate.

We live in a place where people with the most money make most of the important decisions.

We live in a place where people gain so much power that they can do anything that they want.

We live in a place where a detention center can be built in the middle of a swamp in 8 days, but we need to wait months to see a doctor.

What the hell is happening? As I write and publish this, the 4th of July is rapidly approaching and millions of us will watch fireworks, wave flags, have barbecues and bonfires while enjoying a long weekend. We are all flying blind while the plane is on fire. ALL OF US.

I don’t care what your political party says that you should believe. We are all being fed so much dung that we all choke and then go on social media to insult each other. It’s pathetic. We are pathetic. My blog is always stream of consciousness and today is no different. I saw something the other day about Fredrick Douglass. You know, that former slave guy that was mentioned in high school history class but you maybe can’t quite remember why he was in the book?

Well, not only was he a highly intelligent human, he also had a wisdom that seemed to transcend the times. All over New Hampshire (where I live) last weekend, there were public readings of a speech that he made around our Independence Day in 1852. Digging deeper, I have learned that these readings take place each year all over the country. Did you know about this? I had no idea.

So here is what I have for you. Listen to the great voice of James Earl Jones read the speech that Douglass gave us all those years ago.

Funny that things in 1852 have parallels to 2025. I guess we haven’t really learned much. The issue back then was slavery. Insert poverty, immigrants, health care and things like that and his speech still resonates.

Happy 4th of July. While you eat your hotdog and wave your flag, remember that the rich people own all of us and we are too busy fighting with one another to even notice anymore. Maybe this is exactly what they want.

Stay safe, stay awesome and stay tuned.

  1. Well said Patrick! This is a hard day and was in my youth so special to me, and Grandma’s birthday too. I had never heard his speech before! It’s sad to me that as this nation came so far after this we have arrived at these terrible times! Today I should be celebrating and happy and proud of the USA! My daughter struggles today to play with her Wind Symphony at the Portland 4th of July celebration, her heart isn’t in it. She loves music and will focus on that aspect. My grandchildren attended the local parade, glad they have that innocence still. Happy July 4th Patrick!
